~just chilling
Inspired by Andreas Rocha's landscape painting: [link]

---
Oh hey, a human silhouette!

Eeyup, it's a non-pony related theme because the base idea of this landscape is way off the the style of the MLP universe in my opinion. This is sort of a study as well for me to practice drawing mountains and implying rocky details.
As always, constructive criticisms on the values and lighting are very much appreciated.

Oh, and a belated Happy New Year to you guys! Thanks for sticking with me for a year while giving me encouragement along the way!

no doubt this is a great picture, the mountain on the right hand side looks professional and something you would find in concept art for games or movies. The water looks amazing and the technique you used for the splashes is something I want to try myself, the silhouette gives a sense of scale, and your use of saturation gives a sense of depth.

However the mountain just behind your forward most mountain looks lopsided, like its not attached to the ground and about to fall over. In general all the mountains in the background look too triangular and smooth. I'm not a mountain Guru but I would say they need more random shapes and dimensions to give it a more rocky feeling. The color choice of blue is good and that little use of red is a nice touch, however that red is too far towards the edge of the painting and it draws my out rather then in, (same with the silhouette).

All in all well done

Hey. Could you point me to some sites that helped you originally get into concept art, and the things that helped you understand it? Having a heck of a hard time experimenting and nothing I make is appealing. Apologies for the annoying comment ><

Glad to see you're moving away from pure pony artwork. I can't really critique much since I'm pretty sure you're a lot better than me, but maybe add some more purple desaturated hues where the shadows are? Just to sharpen them up, and make sure you don't let the white peaks behind the fog show too much, mountain tops look white because the snow reflects light well, but if their's a lot of fog than not much should reflect back.

I don't care if it's not pony themed. This is still epic, like the rest of your artwork. New background.

I have but one quip. It's not truly an artistic issue, as I have little experience and wouldn't even know where to begin on such things, but more of a physical complication. On the rocks, the water kicks up a spray almost as large as the human. Depending on the velocity of the water, this could be legitimate, but unlikely. Wide rivers tend to be shallow and slow. Generally water parts around rocks and leaves little spray except for at the outset of the river or when spring floods occur. The general docility of the water where it isn't colliding with anything also leads me to believe the water is moving at a relatively calm pace.

Hydrodynamic qualms aside, the mountains look stunning. The sharpness of the peaks tells you a good deal about their age, the line on the left rolling into the horizon giving a queer sense of depth and majesty to the sheer size of the behemoths. I am left wondering what our aged archmage is doing at such a crossing, as well as to the nature of the red flags.

Applause, my good artist. A beautiful piece.

I appreciate a lot when viewers come out with story, or told me what they were wondering. It motivates me in a sense that I'm actually doing something right when I'm making them think. So, thank you.

Point noted about the nature of water. I should have look for more references.

The red flags are part of a magic that is affecting the water! Perhaps he is a hydromancer, and he's practicing his art.

Perhaps the flags are enchanted to change the flow of the water, and in that, he's divining and meditating on the course of events to come.

Looks good!

As an experiment I tried darkening the darks in GIMP, but it changed the mood (weather was really cloudy and mountains stopped looking like icebergs) and I really like the mood of this painting and unintentional ice-like subsurface scattering on mountains. :)

After looking at Andreas Rocha's gallery I see a difference: his paintings are more detailed. It looks like you could try adding more small, sharp, dark shadows on rocks. At least on closest mountain - I think it's rather close, so darks should not be too much affected by air between viewer and mountain.

He has this really strong way of implying details using textures. That was one of the niche I got attracted to.

I always loved your work, but sometimes somethings seem as though they could be more detailed, like the closest mountain. It isn't the focus of the piece but so aren't the birds and they are relatively detailed (I think). But then again I know nothing about art. I just like looking at it, and I definitely love looking at your work :)
